WBC welterweight champion Sergio Martinez won over WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik in a unanimous decision during their fight held at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, Saturday.
Martinez dominated the early roundws but was knocked down on the seventh round. The Argentinian boxer who is fighting out of Spain immediately recovered to inflict damage to the right eye of Kelly Pavlik. Martinez capitalized on the eye injury to win a unanimous decision.
"It was a 12 round plan," Martinez said. "I knew in the long run he would show his true championship colors. But I knew at the end I had to finish off strongly."
Pavlik was scheduled to fight Paul Williams last October 3 but his injured left hand had not healed completely forcing Williams to take another fight against Sergio Martinez.
