Social Networking Website Facebook Edges Google First Time

Facebook has reached its 'important milestone' in the Internet according to a survey by Hitwise Intelligence, as the popular social networking site edges Google to grab its lead as the most visited site in the USA.

Sky.com reports: The social networking website knocked the search engine off the top spot for the week ending March 13, according to industry analysts Experian Hitwise. Facebook.com received 7.07% of all Internet traffic, edging ahead of Google.com which had 7.03%. It is the first time that Facebook has enjoyed a weekly lead over Google.

Analysts have pointed out though that the figures do not take into account other factors such as searches made through the Google tool bar for Internet browsers including services such as Gmail and Google maps. Google would still be ahead if these other services including You Tube hits are taken into account.

The popular video sharing site is owned by Google.
